Justin Reed is sixteen and has problems.
His mum died during the summer holidays, his older brother, the only person he feels he can talk to, is away at university, and he lives with a father who simply can’t deal with anything emotional. Justin tries to navigate his way through his final year at secondary school but his friends and teachers no longer seem to know how to treat him, or what to say, so they keep their distance.
But then there’s Niall Casey; he’s funny and compassionate, and makes Justin feel things that confuse him; they make him feel wonderful but even more isolated at the same time. As if Justin’s life isn’t complicated enough, he now has to try to make sense of the thoughts and emotions that course through him every time he sees Niall.
This is a story about taking risks, facing the truth and finding love when it seems that the whole world is against you.

Where to start in reviewing "Breaking Out" by Garry M. Tuckwell. There are two things that immediately stand out; first, is Peter's gift of the double bed at the end of the story and second, Mr. Tuckwell's dedication to "Simon." Simon and Garry sound like two very lucky gentleman.I enjoyed this story. Yes, there were some editing errors and sometimes it makes for difficult reading. I find no fault with the author for these. The story was thoughtful, realistic, and charming in many ways. Should we all be so fortunate to find the loves of our lives at the tender age of 16? This is the romantic element I love about this story, and I am all about romance.
Coming out in the 70's and the son of a minister, I empathize all too well with the bigotry and arrogance of Niall's parents. It's sad that there are many young people that are subjected to this kind of thought even in this year of 2013. Unfortunately, that is something that will probably never change. I support the manner in which Niall dealt with his parent's prejudice. In a quiet and unassuming way, Justin's father Peter grew in his own way. The gift of the double bed was a testament to how far he had come in accepting his son and his son's partner. I was really touched.
As a side note, I have to say the individual who gave the story a 1 - star rating, I was completely baffled by what you were trying to say. It made no sense and it seemed you were more intent on writing something for your own reading pleasure. You really did the author a disservice with the incongruity of your review. This is first time I've ever commented on another reviewer but please, just what were you trying to say? Better yet, never mind.
Well done Mr. Tuckwell. Looking forward to reading more from you in the future.

Breaking Out edition by Garry M Tuckwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Others have already commented on the plot and there is nothing I can add there. This book deserves the 5 stars I gave it. You really can feel and relate to the characters and what they are going through. This book is honest and very true to the situations the main characters are facing. This is something you would experience in real life if you were in their shoes. An excellent read.
Highly recommend, very sweet and romantic. Well-written and enjoyable. Have already reread it. And the second book too! Great read.
A very articulate and touching story with a well developed plot and interesting characters. Highly recommended.
I can say without hesitation that I loved this book.
I thought the characters were real, the storyline plausible, and that the dialog exceeded the threshold of defining it as an exceptional read. The story was heartfelt, entertaining and at times exasperating. I enjoyed the evolution of Justin's relationship with Niall, appreciated how they interrelated, and felt a kindred warmth watching the ups and downs of them getting to know one another. In addition, I thought the secondary relationships added significant substance to the book and, upon its completion, felt that I was saying good bye to cherished friends. A story can get no greater accolades.
While the reviewers who criticized the book for errant punctuation may have had a point, for me, such trivial oversights did little to diminish my enjoyment of the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "breaking out", partly, perhaps, because I could find some aspects of my own life mirrored in those of the protagonists Justin and Niall - not only in the timescale - which completely matches my own - almost to the year come to think of it - but also because I knew intimately many of the places mentioned in the book the galleria near Hatfield for example, and I even lived in Lower Earley in Reading, which is where they are looking to live at the end of the story. The characters were all totally believable and, by the end, I felt like part of the family. Thoroughly enjoyable reading!
I am an aficionado of gay coming of age and gay romance books. I've read countless. Garry M. Tuckwell's "Breaking Out" is among the very best of the genres. The lead characters he creates, Justin and Niall, are fully fleshed out and very likable. The obstacles he puts in the couple's way are very true to life, and the ways they confront these challenges are very believable. The story spans many years and the author really keeps you turning the pages to follow the evolution of Justin and Niall's relationship. Great story, great characters (loved Justin's family), great book. I strongly recommend it.
These two boys/men were charming and respectful and filled with love and promise. They go through the same things boys and men all over the world go through and they do it together. Talks a lot about how Justin's dad had trouble with showing emotion, very much like a lot of older men throughout the world, very macho. Lots of talk about about homophobic parents, and not understanding the lifestyle of two gay men, and the thoughts of accepting that all Christians are not anti gay. I really loved this book, and the style Garry uses in a very natural descriptive text, even when he was getting agitated, Justin was coming across as in control. I think I saw myself in a lot of this, although when I was their age, being gay was infinitely more problematic than it is today, even though they did witness homophobic slurs on more than one occasion. Not secretly I love happy endings, and everything that goes with that, and this is a book I will enjoy more than a couple of times. I loved going through their troubles and triumphs, and it was very elementary but satisfying just the same. A super fine read, most recommended 5.0 stars 06232014
